Sugar is Sugar.. Right??

If you’ve been paying attention lately, there is no avoiding the fact that sugar is poison!! Yes it raises your blood sugar. Yes it exacerbates hyperactivity. Yes it is addictive. Yes it is totally lacking in nutrients. Yes it does play havoc with your cholesterol balance. Yes it causes insulin resistance. Yes it Will make you gain weight.. But one really terrible characteristic of sugar is it’s ability to cause inflammation.  Inflammation will surface in your body at your weakest points… For me it’s my joints and my gut!!  For you it could be respiratory problems, blood pressure or blood sugar problems, headaches, fibromyalgia or just a very sick gut!!

But, you declare!! I don’t eat Sugar!!!  If you eat white carbohydrates, you are eating sugar… The carbohydrate is converted to sugar as it hits the saliva in your mouth.   If you eat fruit, you are eating Fructose and Glucose .. also sugars!!!  Maple Syrup?? Sugar!!!   Dairy products contain Galactose and Lactose – Sugar!! There’s even sugar hiding in Barley!!  Sadly, honey has to be considered as a sugar too!!!

But… If you can find local raw honey, splurging on just a touch every once in a while might really have some health benefits!!  Honey contains natural anti-oxidants, enzymes and minerals that include iron, zinc, potassium, calcium, phosphorus, magnesium and selenium.  Honey even contains vitamins such as vitamin B6, niacin and pantothenic acid!!!!  Vitamins found in honey include vitamin B6, thiamin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and niacin.

Honey has wonderful anti-bacterial properties that can help heal your gut (as well as your skin!!!  I mix it with coconut oil to wash my face and exfoliate dry skin!!!)  For years anecdotal stories have abounded suggesting that swallowing raw local honey can combat the symptoms of seasonal allergies… And… I’ve tried this one out.. it helps you sleep!!! Taking a teaspoon full before bed can help the liver adjust to your sleep pattern, and keep you snoozing!!!

So my take on the issue? Yes Sugar is Sugar… and honey is sugar… but it is so wonderful for you, adding it to you diet in small amounts can be beneficial!

One great way to use honey is to add some powerhouse spices to it!!!  You can use some of the most healing spices in amazing combinations for different results!

Try some of these combinations.. Or.. make up your own!!

Spicy Honey

                      1 tsp ginger powder
                      1 tsp Turmeric
                      1/2 tsp cinnamon
                      4 ounces raw honey
Green power honey
                       1 tsp Spirulina
                       1 tsp Turmeric
                       1/2 tsp cinnamon
                       1 tsp ginger
                       4 ounces raw honey
Sniffle curing honey
                        1 tsp ginger
                        1 tsp Turmeric
                        1/2 tsp cayenne pepper
                        1/2 tsp cinnamon
                        4 ounces raw honey
Mix well – keep in a covered jar
You can enjoy these by the teaspoonful when you need a burst of energy… Or are fighting off a cold!! You can add a teaspoonful to a cup of really hot water as well!!!
